Ernst Julius Öpiku 125. sünniaastapäeva sümpoosion

23. novembril tähistab Tartu observatoorium ülikooli aulas sümpoosioniga maailmakuulsa astronoomi, Eesti astronoomiakoolkonna ühe rajaja Ernst Julius Öpiku 125. sünniaastapäeva.
Sümpoosionil käsitletakse Öpiku teaduspärandi olulisemaid tahke, heidetakse pilk tema töömeetoditesse ja esitatakse isiklikke mälestuskilde. Mitmekülgselt andeka Öpiku kirjutatud muusikapalu tulevad esitama Heino Elleri nimelise Tartu muusikakooli õpilased. Öpik oli üks kaheteistkümnest Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia asutajaliikmest ja on valitud Eesti 20. sajandi suurkujude hulka. Tema põhiline teadustöö valmis Tartu tähetornis, hiljem ka Armagh’ observatooriumis Iirimaal. Paljude astronoomiliste teemade hulgas uuris ta Andromeeda udukogu kaugust, tähtede evolutsiooni ja Päikesesüsteemi, olles sageli oma ajast ees. Öpik oli andekas ka muusikas: ta komponeeris ning mängis suurepäraselt klaverit.
